Are Red Dots Overhyped

Red dot on the hellcat

Well, First Things First – I Have Astigmatism

So the dot is basically a smear. If I wear my glasses it’s crispier.

I have red dots on my rifle, glock, and hellcat. Red dots are faster to acquire, they’re more accurate at distance, but require additional training and practice.

Theyre ugly and on the size of this gun, most red dots are too tall and look aesthetically displeasing. I believe that’s the case here. I am a function over form guy every damn day of the week. I like plain things and prioritize utility over looks. That doesn’t mean the aesthetics of this don’t bother me, it since it does enhance utility I’m ok with it.

I went with an enclosed poetic because it keeps the emitter protected from dust and moisture. It’s a very robust design.

This optic has a 32 moa circle which means it gives me a huge dot to put on the target. Which should be pretty fast in a life or death situation. With irons you have to line up the sights.

Another benefit of a 32 moa circle is that on follow up shots, the big red dot is fast to pick back up by the human eye.

So at the end of the day, I’m going to try it, see if I like it, but ultimately maybe go back to iron sights.
