Using AI To Supercharge Your Intelligence

A dimensional gateway, imagined by Gemini, representing the potential of artificial intelligence

By now most people are aware of generative AI, and tools like chatgpt, google’s gemini, or meta’s AI.

For most people it’s an interesting toy or a cheat code for writing reports or emails.

For some, AI is a tool that’s allowing them to rapidly understand things like, the tax code, corporate law, real restate and financial markets.

It’s all in the prompt:

To get the most out of AI, we need to ask the right questions. For an AI, this is referred to as a “prompt”. Getting the prompt right is an art and a skill. It takes time and testing to refine a prompt to give you what you want.

AIs aren’t perfect and the info they return may be mostly correct but still contain critical errors. I use the information generates from the AI as a jumping off point. I skim through it and check critical pieces of info for errors.

How to use AI:

I’ve asked AI to generate:

  • Tax strategies that maximize the use of tax credits and deductions
  • Market research reports
  • Fundamental analysis for stocks
  • Summaries of corporate annual reports
  • Summaries of financial commentary
  • Summaries of local and national news
  • Business strategies and estate planning strategies that reduce liability and tax burdens
  • Help with writing business plans and filling out grant applications

Tips for writing good prompts:

Here is a list of tips and tricks for crafting effective prompts for generative AI, synthesized from the provided search results which include guidance published by OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, and other AI experts:

  1. Be specific, clear and detailed in your instructions. Describe exactly what you want the AI to do.
  2. Provide relevant context about the task, audience, desired tone/style, and output format.
  3. Use examples to demonstrate the desired output. The more examples the better to help the AI learn the task.
  4. Break down complex tasks into a series of sub-prompts. Have the AI think through the problem step-by-step.
  5. Avoid vague, ambiguous or overly abstract language. Be precise in what you’re asking for.
  6. Tell the AI what to do rather than what not to do. Frame instructions positively.
  7. Specify any constraints like word count, keywords to include, formatting requirements etc.
  8. Assign the AI a persona or role to play, like “You are an expert copywriter” to set context.
  9. Iterate and refine your prompts based on the AI’s outputs. Crafting effective prompts requires experimentation.
  10. Use special tokens like XML tags, ### or “”” to structure and separate parts of your prompt.
  11. Leverage the full context window size of the AI model for complex tasks. Some models can handle very long prompts.
  12. Test prompts against benchmarks to empirically measure performance before deploying.
  13. Utilize prompt engineering tools, libraries and notebooks provided by AI companies to streamline the process.

The key themes that emerge are: be specific, provide ample context and examples, iterate based on outputs, leverage AI prompt engineering tools, and measure performance empirically. Crafting effective prompts is both an art and science that requires understanding the AI’s capabilities and limitations.

Improving Prompts:

Once you have a prompt put together, you can simply feed it into a generative AI and ask it to improve the prompt. Here is a sample prompt asking the AI to improve a prompt:

“You are a prompt engineer working with Perplexity.ai, a customer wants to use perplexity’s search and generative ai functionality to generate market research reports for real estate investors. The report will rely on zip codes to generate reports about the local real estate market to help investors make purchasing decisions. The customer has provided a prompt for the system to use, but it needs to be enhanced and optimized for Claude 3 Opus by Anthropic. Analyze the prompt and improve it by making sure that the report generated by the prompt covers all of the datapoints a market research report for real estate investors would include. Improve the formatting, use a standard format if it exists. If the user missed key metrics, add them into their prompt. Focus on helping Claud3 provide factual and relevant, highly accurate information. Here is the prompt:

[insert prompt]”

It may take several iterations to get exactly what you want, and this may evolve over time.

Keeping track of prompts:

As you can see, a good prompt may be quite lengthy and take a substantial amount of time and effort to organize.

I use the PARA method from Tiago Forte’s book “Building A Second Brain”. I store my prompts in a folder called “The Book of Prompts” and have organized them by topic.

Here are other tools you can use to create prompts and find prompt ideas:

There are several popular and highly-rated tools and libraries for storing and managing prompts for use with AI. These tools cater to different needs, from free options to paid services, and offer various features to enhance prompt engineering. Here are some of the notable ones:
